Big Meadows Lodge in Shenandoah National Park, VA --> Waynesboro, VA
60.01 Miles & 3,947 ft Elevation loss
Hi all! It’s Duha blogging today. I sprained my back on the second day of biking and was picked up by the wonderful driver of the day (Katherine). Since then, I decided to (begrudgingly) rest and let my back heal. I woke up early in Shenandoah and enjoyed the crisp cool air while very aware of the haze in the distance from wildfire smoke. Then, I helped Joy load and reorganize the car. I'm very proud of our organization technique (see below), and even managed to free up extra space!
(Yes this was on a pizza paper plate).
We then began the second leg of the Shenandoah journey and began driving out of the park towards Waynesboro Virginia. The route was absolutely beautiful and I’ll share some photos courtesy of Vin.
We saw so many deer (alive) and fawns that would be so surprised when they would see us (because they couldn’t hear us approach).
This was a mostly downhill ride so the bikers finished pretty quick and after a short stop for lunch at an overlook, met us in town for Benny’s Pizza.
This pizza was HUGE (36” across to be precise). We got half pepperoni and half cheese to accommodate vegetarians and meat eaters alike but despite all of our efforts, we could not finish it (see picture below with fork for scale).
After exploring the small but cute town of Waynesboro, we headed to our host, Francine, who has hosted many Spokes teams in the past!
We got to see their photos and hear about her adventures traveling and life as a Professor. She cooked up a super tasty dinner which everyone gobbled up despite having stuffed themselves with pizza a few hours earlier, and then served gingerbread with lemon icing.
After showering and settling in, I got to meet Griffin! Griffin is Francine’s blind, 18-year-old cat who was super friendly and loved cuddling. Here is a cute picture of him sleeping.
While I did not bike today, I had such a great time exploring Waynesboro and meeting Francine. I can’t wait for our next adventure in Lexington!
