Spokes day 41: A Day in the Life of a Spoke

Friday, July 5

Often on other long-term expeditions like this, time seems to pass quickly, and before you know it, a month has gone by. But not for the Spokes! I love that our time together is so full that it's something almost manifest, making it feel very real. I can viscerally feel in my bones that I've spent almost a month and a half with this truly amazing group of people - and I'm stoked for the next month we still have!

The next photos show a pretty typical day in our life. Luckily for me, most of us aren't crazy early risers, so we wake up around 6 and try to leave our host at 7 (read: leave at 7:15).

We leave our host's home, or whatever campground/firehouse/church/field/community center graciously housed us, and bike 30-60 miles before lunch.

We stop for bar breaks and photoshoots along the way. Obviously the second is crucially important.

Usually lunch is in a park with a playground, so we burn off our excess energy with some good frolicking. Don't ask where this excess energy comes from; it's a great mystery to me.

After biking another 30-50 miles, we try to always stretch and do core, then shower off. The core happens far less frequently than the showering, but I view every time we succeed as a victory! Better this than the other way around, since we smell pretty dank after a 90 mile day.

A special event today, rolling into Great Bend, KS; our hosts Cassie and Adam were over the moon hospitable! We swapped stories, theirs of adventuring and living in Palau, ours from the last month of biking. Finally they surprised us by serving - on real plates at the table - a fancy lasagna and salad meal. They followed it up with homemade ice cream in 5 flavors. We felt like royalty!

One last feature from today: How to do a bicycle-lifting photo

Scope out the territory, finding the most scenic spot for the classic pose.

Take a moment to do some pondering about the meaning of life, the existence of good and evil, and whether your arms are strong enough today to lift your bike.

Take your position, establish your grips.

Heave the bike around and up, as your throw your body back to counterbalance the vehicle's weight.

Relish with shaking arms your victory over road and hill, together with your trusty mount.

That's all, folks!
