Day 67: Rest Days Are For Exploring

After biking for two and a half weeks with no rest, everyone was thrilled to have a rest day in Carson City, Nevada. We had three learning festivals during that time, so while at least we aren't biking 80+ miles, teaching isn't a true break. Both Utah and Nevada have been a lot more mountainous than I expected. At least Erin and I (route planners!) loaded the last two weeks of our trip with some shorter days, though not less steep, and three rest days in beautiful locations.

During the last few weeks, our wake up time was 5am to help beat the heat of the early to mid afternoon on highway 50, which has absolutely no shade whatsoever. Because most of us were unable to sleep past 7am, except Bill, who we woke up at 9:30am, we decided to explore Carson Street, the cute downtown area just a few blocks away from our host's house. Devin and I went to the Capitol building and learned about some of the State's history.

In the late morning, we all gathered together and got ready to head to Lake Tahoe for a day at the beach. On our way out of Carson City, we stopped at a cafe for breakfast/snack and I got a delicious blueberry scone. I drove on highway 50 up to the lake and we got a preview of the 9 miles of straight uphill that we would face in two days. As I've learned previously, however hard a ride looks from the car, it is always more difficult on the bike.

We wound through trees for 30 min before reaching one of the beaches. It was the most crowded beach I had ever seen in my life, and there was no parking. Not even trying the parking lot, I drove on. Luckily, we discovered a hidden cove for swimming and jumping off rocks just a few miles later. The lake reminded me of my favorite beach back home, with clear blue water and rocks to jump from.

Devin realizes that he's made a mistake with the sunscreen and subsequently tries to give everyone his excess.

Later, we headed back to get changed, then drove to Reno to explore. Devin and Bill got soup, and Leah, Caralyn, and I walked downtown. Leah got married twice and Caralyn and I pretended to be whales. We ate tacos from a hipster food truck. I walked into my first casino and promptly walked back outside.

We met up with Evan's friend's family for a delicious dinner and we chatted about our weirdest biking stories and living inside glass boxes for a weekend. We got back late, but luckily we are teaching instead of biking tomorrow at our last learning festival!
