We were really tired. There were 64 miles ahead but 4300 ft of elevation gain, and we all knew this was gonna be hard. In the map we looked that there were 2 hills and the last one was the hardest, after passing that hill everything would be alright...
We started the day with the first hill after 7 miles in a flat road. The "fast" group (Bill and I) went up the hill slow but steady, and I would say that we did approximately 1/3 of the total elevation of the day. Going down the hill... The view was beautiful, biking the first full day in the loneliest road of the US gives you more perspective, there is nothing right in front you, just desert. I could listen my wheels going around and nothing more. It was simply perfect.
Going down the hill the "other" group saw that Devin's wheel was wobbling so Evan and Devin decided to hitchhike for the last 15 miles to get to the lunch place. We had our lunch break entering the second hill. Since yesterday was a really hard day for me, I was exhausted and couldn't continue, so I hop in the car with Erin and Devin because of his wheel.
The other two groups continue against the hill that was probably more than 2000 ft up. We went to tEly and search for places to stay because we didn't have anywhere for that day and we found a place in the grace baptist church but we had to get there at 8:30 because they had an event.
The car crew went to the pool to ask for showers and the first group shows up, it was Caralyn and Leah, and both of them left the lunch place after the "other" group. They told us that they hitchhiked when they got to the bottom after crossing the second hill.
Half of our team hitchhiked and the other half was interested in doing so because they had never hitchhiked in their lives!
Leah and Devin went to another town to search for bike shops to repair Devin's wheel. The rest of the team was hanging around Ely and we decided to eat Chinese food and watch the Lion King in the local theater.
