Day 58 : Back to School

Updated: Aug 5, 2019

Hey kids! Here at spokes we know going back in the fall can be stressful. So, as we stay in the music room of the high school, we are here to give you advice on how to be cool and successful durning the upcoming school year!

Step 1 - Wake up!

Definitely the hardest step for me, the important part of each morning is to wake up early so you can be productive! Today we woke up at 5 to get a jump start on the day.

Step 2 - Wake up! - pt. 2

All right, lets be real. Getting up at 5 is actually the worst, but liquid sleep makes every morning just a little bit better, thats right, I’m talking about coffee! After biking a solid 35 miles, I was in the van for the second half of the day. As there were only 15 miles left, there was not much time for me to do things, but something I definitely fit in was a large McDonalds coffee. It’s the most amount of happiness you can get for 1$ or less.

Step 3 - Get in Shape

The most important part of back to school is making sure you look good to impress all of your classmates with your new bod. You know the old adage: look good, feel good. As a team, we are well aware of this, so after getting set up in the high school at 11:30, many of us went to the track to get in some laps in the arid Utah heat.

Step 4 - New ‘Do

After you get into peak physical condition, the next thing you need to do on your road to coolness and success is to get right in the head. Wait, no. I said that wrong, you need to get right on your head. (read: you need a haircut). Thanks to our talented team barber, Caralyn, I was able to get my fresh cut for cheap. Call your nearest friend with a pair of clippers to do their best to make you look good.

Step 5 - Get Clean

I’ll be honest with you… ya stank. No, I promise, you really do. Don’t worry though, the only thing you need to do to fix it, is take a nice long cold shower, particularly in a large, empty room (to diffuse the funk, of course). Then, use a ridiculous amount of deodorant, and you are good to go!

Step 6 - Get Stylish

Ok, now you’re good to go when it comes to your personal upkeep and whatnot. This means that now, you have to get a new look. It is especially helpful to go to a place where you can try on a lot of things, and see what fits you and your personality. Check out these spokes getting ready for prom season.

Step 7 - Get Sharp

Now, we are on to the most important part of getting ready for school. The actual learning part. To get ready, we spent a few hours working on brainteasers, some of them were a lot of fun and intuitive. However there were also a few of them that are completely insane and nonintuitive, which will prepare you for the frustration of the school year!

Step 8 - Fuel Up

Its always important to get some food in your belly so you can be ready to take on the next day! It is even more beneficial if you can get a nice home cooked meal, like we did tonight with our hosts who made delicious pulled pork and lentil soup.

Step 9 - Prepare to Clean

Sometimes, things happen, for instance, tonight the washer in the Home Ec room broke and flooded the entire hallway, which meant we had to stay up and mop the floors. School can be messy, and sometimes you have to prepare to clean it up.

Step 10 - Stay Up All Night

Sleep deprivation is a staple of school years, and our stay back in high school was no different. A safety light that stayed on in our room led many members to seek refuge in practice rooms. Maile tried to tough it out, but ended up waking up at 3 am and moving anyways.

Have fun going back to school Kids!
